Sălaj - The Land of Silvania


               Known in ancient times as the Land of Silvania or the Land
               of the Forests, Sălaj County is located in Romania, in the
               centre of Northern Transylvania, at the passage between
               the Eastern Carpathians and the Apuseni Mountains and
               covers an area of over 3,800 km . The ethnic diversity of

               the 215,910 inhabitants of the county - Romanians, Hun-
               garians, Roma, Slovaks - reflects the interculturality spe-
               cific  to  most  of  the  county’s  areas  each  one  exhibiting
               well-defined features, areas that bring together the 61 ad-
               ministrative and territorial units of the county - 4 cities and

                                                                       Sălaj County, as the true territory of the Roman fortresses
                                                                       partially overlaid on the route of the ancient limes of Ro-
                                                                       man Dacia, spans the vestiges of Roman fortresses from
                                                                       Porolissum, Buciumi, Romita - Brusturi (Certiae), Tihău, Su-
                                                                       toru (Optatiana) and from Românaşi (Largiana). Archaeo-
                                                                       logical research reveals the existence of settlements from
                                                                       the Paleolithic period on Sălaj’s territory, specifically from
                                                                       the Bronze Age and from the first and second Iron Age, the
                                                                       Dacian period.
