Netting rods, Sălaj
Residents in some areas of Sălaj, such as the Someș
Valley, have a long tradition in processing and netting
rods , craft passed from father to son for generations.

The netting is made of shallow rocks from their own
plantations and in the past they were gathered direct-
ly from Someș’ shore. Rods of willow are of several
shades, colors and textures are processed in several
stages: they are cooked, peeled, dried and stored in a
place protected from moisture, then sprinkled again
and braided. The willows are flexible, powerful and
versatile, being used by the craftsmen because of the
malleability they offer for machining, creating a wide
variety of objects, from small to decorative to shop-
ping baskets.

The Ceramic Pieces from Zalău have a white, blue and
green glaze being decorated with geometric, phytomor-
phic and zoomorphic motifs such as: Delft onion, dou-
ble-crowned tree, birds, Renaissance bouquets, flowers
with four petals, rounded-pointed leaves, all arranged
in geometric steps and organized in several small deco-
rative fields, drawn with a thin brush or with a horn.
Besides the decorative side, all these objects also have
a practical utility. 13
