Sălaj - fabulos, traditional
and spiritual
On this route we have experiences as diverse as they are
beautiful. We start from Jibou city visiting “Vasile Fati” Bo-
tanical Garden Jibou which houses over 5,000 species of
plants, a Japanese garden with lakes full of water lilies of
every colour, the ornamental flowers, botanical greenhous- “Vasile Fati” Botanical Garden, Jibou

es, complex aquariums, the paleontological sector, the zoologi-
cal sector, the dendrological sector and a miniature of Mount
Fuji, then continue to Bălan and discover the Dragons’ Garden
and the Cave, where mythology and the natural creation are
hand in hand. If we are lucky and not too late, lost in the fabu-
lous landscape, we can also taste the traditional Sălaj pies that
were once so present in the houses of the locals. Anyway, we
would wrap up the discovery of the Dragons’ Garden by visit-
ing a spiritual and traditional stopover at the wooden church
St. Michael and Gabriel in Bălan and then Strâmba Monastery
from the same locality, thus completing the experience offered
by this area of Sălaj. On return path to Zalău, we visit in Poarta
Sălajului the wooden church St. Archangels Michael and Ga-
briel and the wooden church from the locality Ciumărna with
the same name in the village of Ciumărna, where we can ad-
mire the ingenuity of architectural art of woodworking. If we
decide to head to Cluj-Napoca, following the tourist map of the
county, you can find Sălaj’s apiaries (http://Sălaj-county.map-
2web.eu/) which will provide tasting opportunities
and purchasing moments of natural honey or raw 36
pollen produced on-site.
